🧠 Dyslexia in Children – Local Guidance

GPs are often asked about dyslexia assessments, but it’s important to note that dyslexia is not a diagnosis GPs can make. Full assessments are provided privately, and parents can begin the process through their child’s school.

  • Parents should contact the special educational needs (SEN) department at school to request a basic screening.
  • If further assessment is required, the school may advise contacting a Specialist Dyslexia Teacher β€” for example, Yorkshire Dyslexia (approx. Β£500, with around an 8-week wait).
  • Schools sometimes suggest a Visual Stress test as symptoms can overlap with dyslexia. Valli Opticians in Wakefield offer this service (around Β£50) using coloured overlays.
  • Children should also have an up-to-date NHS eye test, which is free for under-18s.

Schools may provide overlays or recommend further support based on screening outcomes. These steps can help identify whether additional specialist assessment is appropriate.

πŸ“ Local Weight Management Update July 2025

There has been ongoing confusion around available weight management services and the prescribing of Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) in Wakefield and Pontefract. With support from James Brownjohn (MYHT), we’ve prepared a summary to clarify the current position.

  • Local referral pathways by BMI and clinical criteria
  • Eligibility for services such as Aspire, Oviva, and specialist bariatric support
  • The current RED drug status of Tirzepatide for weight management
  • Which services are open for referral and how to access them

A new West Yorkshire commissioning policy is expected by the end of July. We will provide updates once this is finalised.
