Wakefield LMC History
Local Panel Committees were established by David Lloyd George in 1911 to represent local doctors who took patients on to their panel. In 1913 these were re-named as Local Medical Committees (LMCs); LMCs are recognised by successive NHS Acts as the professional organisation representing individual GPs.
The 1999 NHS Act extended the role of LMCs to include representation of all GPs whatever their contractual status.
Role of the LMC
LMCs represent the views of GPs to Strategic Health Authorities (SHAs), Primary Care Trusts (PCTS), Clinical Commissioning groups (CCGs) and any other appropriate organisations or agencies.
The LMC provides assistance to general practitioners on all matters relevant to general practice such as NHS regulations, GMS and PMS contracts, GP terms and conditions, complaints and partnership issues; we also provide pastoral support to GPs.
LMCs are independent self-financing bodies, paid for by a levy of GPs earnings.
It has statutory functions to represent the interests of general practice alone and acts as its advocate. We are not a trade union.
Election
We have 5 constituencies across the district and the LMC has 21 members, 5 of the posts are reserved for salaried GPs and one for a GP trainee; all posts are elected.
Meetings are usually held on the first Thursday of each month (except August) at Trinity Medical Centre, Thornhill Street, Wakefield.
