About the LMC

Wakefield Local Medical Committee (LMC) represents and supports all GPs and practice teams across Wakefield and Pontefract. The information below outlines our history, purpose, structure and governance.

📜 Wakefield LMC History

Local Panel Committees were established by David Lloyd George in 1911 to represent local doctors who took patients on to their panel. In 1913 these were renamed as Local Medical Committees (LMCs). LMCs are recognised by successive NHS Acts as the professional organisation representing individual GPs.

The 1999 NHS Act extended the role of LMCs to include representation of all GPs, whatever their contractual status.

🧭 Role of the LMC

LMCs represent the views of GPs to Strategic Health Authorities (SHAs), Primary Care Trusts (PCTs), Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) and any other appropriate organisations or agencies.

The LMC provides assistance to general practitioners on all matters relevant to general practice such as NHS regulations, GMS and PMS contracts, GP terms and conditions, complaints and partnership issues. We also provide pastoral support to GPs.

LMCs are independent self-financing bodies, paid for by a levy of GPs’ earnings. They have statutory functions to represent the interests of general practice and act as its advocate. LMCs are not trade unions.

🗳 Election

The Wakefield Local Medical Committee (LMC) is made up of elected GPs from across the Wakefield District, representing a mix of GP partners, salaried GPs, and one GP trainee. All posts are filled through election to ensure fair and broad representation across the local area.

The committee meets monthly, with meeting dates typically set for the first Thursday of each month (excluding August), held at Maybush Medical Centre, Belle Isle Health Park, Portobello Road, Wakefield.
